The White House was designed by architect James Hoban and contains 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, eight staircases and three elevators. Before U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901, it was called "The President's House," "The President's Palace" and "Executive Mansion." Various presidents have had the structure renovated and restored throughout the decades. The White House displays many fine pieces of art including paintings, sculptures and furnishings.
