The protected wildlife area in Wainfleet Township in Ontario attracts more than 50 different species of birds including great blue herons, terns, sandpipers, egrets and gulls. Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation Area was bought in 1976 by the Niagara Conservation Area Authority and used to be a clay and limestone quarry from the late 1800s to the 1960s. In addition to birds, many fish, turtles, snakes and plants currently live there. Wainfleet Wetlands contains many colorful rock formations as well as fossil remains of ancient plant and animal life.
