Current home to the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Tiradentes Palace stands atop the land that was once held the Old Jail where Brazilian revolutionary and national hero Jose da Silva Xavier Tiradentes was imprisoned. The Palace pays homage to him and his efforts in Brazil's war for independence against Portugal. A mixture of French and Neoclassical styles, the Palace's exterior features six columns before the entrance, a series of sculptures representing Brazil's government and independence, and a grandiose stain glass dome.
