St. James' Cathedral, or Catedral de Santiago, was built as Bilbao's main parish during the 14th and 15th centuries, and for a time was a pilgrimage stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. It was declared a cathedral in 1950 following the establishment of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bilbao. The interior features a nave in the form of a Greek cross, and the exterior a monumental Renaissance portico and Neo-Gothic facade.
