This picturesque valley in Virginia and West Virginia is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Potomac River and James River. Shenandoah Valley was first explored by the Europeans in 1671 with the region's name coming from a nearby river. It also was a strategic site during the American Civil War. Shenandoah Valley has become an American Viticultural Area producing wines. Notable attractions are Luray Caverns, Shenandoah Caverns, Grand Caverns and Dixie Caverns.
