Along the Oregon coast just north of the Florence are a series of caverns resting at sea level where Stellar and Californian sea lions gather . The cavern walls have been stained pink, green, purple, and red by the accumulation of algae, lichen, and mineral stains. Visitors to the caverns can view the inner structures and wildlife from an elevated observation area, but there are two others openings, one of which is continuously flooded, while the other is only flooded during high tide. During winter the caves become a major nesting area for the Stellar sea lions, and during the breeding seasons they stay in the rookeries of the caves.
