Located on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula in the Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound houses the port of Valdez, the islands Cordova and Whittier, and the Alaska native villages Chenega and Tatitlek. Originally named "Sandwich Sound" by Captain James Cook in honor of his patron, the Earl of Sandwich, it was later changed to Prince William Sound to honor English Prince William IV. Cruise ships frequently traverse the waters to see the Alaskan glaciers up close, as it is very accessible from Anchorage.
