Often called the "Russian Versailles," this compound of palaces and gardens in St. Petersburg was commissioned by Peter the Great. The Peterhof Palace Complex's first structure was designed by Jean-Baptiste Le Blond and built between 1714-21. Russian tsars and tsarinas made numerous additions throughout the years including Empress Elizabeth's Grand Palace expansion and garden extensions. The Peterhof Palace Complex spans more than 1,200 acres and features more than 20 museums. It has been named one of the "Seven Wonders of Russia" by a group of Russian media organizations.
