The 300-foot tall centerpiece of Parliament Hill in Ottawa is an emblem of Canada and is pictured on the country's $20 bill. The ornate structure that was designed by Jean Omer Marchand and John A. Pearson in Victorian High Gothic style contains a carillon and clock. It was constructed from 1921-22 after the original Victoria Tower was destroyed during a 1916 fire. Peace Tower was named to represent Canada's continued dedication to peace and contains a Memorial Chamber to honor those Canadians who lost their lives during the country's wars. These veterans have their names contained in the chamber's Books of Remembrance.
