The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial was created in 1944 after a temporary cemetery was started nearby by the United States Army. The cemetery that overlooks the English Channel and Omaha Beach also has a memorial with the names of 1,557 Americans who fought at Normandy, but couldn't be located or identified. It contains a D-Day time capsule, as well.
