This famous scenic New York site has played an important role in United States history from when the Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants arriving to Ellis Island to its prime launching location for World War II vessels. New York Harbor, which the Delaware Indians began using the waters for fishing in the 16th Century, is located at the Hudson River's estuary where it meets New York Bay. It's one of the largest natural harbors in the world and is a destination of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Commuter ferries, cruise ships and recreational boats traverse its waters. Governors Island is one of the harbor islands, as well.
