The festive evergreen has been decorated for Christmas since 1923 in the United States capital of Washington, D.C. The National Christmas Tree is located within the President's Park South, also called The Ellipse, near the White House. Every year the U.S. president illuminates the tree and makes a speech in early December kicking off the city's Pageant of Peace. The Pathway of Peace around the large tree is made up of smaller trees representing U.S. states and territories.
