About Lake Michigan

The only Great Lake located entirely in the United States, Lake Michigan borders the U.S. cities of Chicago, Milwaukee and Green Bay as well as many others. Lake Michigan is 22,300 square miles making it the third largest Great Lake. The earliest inhabitants are said to be the Hopewell Indians back in 800 A.D. and French explorer Jean Nicolet traversed the lake in the late 1630s. The freshwater lake has miles of beautiful beaches and is a popular vacation spot. Points of interest are Navy Pier, Indiana Dunes State Park, Mackinac Bridge and Illinois Beach State Park.
