Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 was laid out in 1832 in a cross-pattern and named after the City of Lafayette which originally was separated from New Orleans. It now has approximately 1,100 family tombs and more than 7,000 people buried in it. Some of the more well-known individuals laid to rest in the cemetery include Judge John Howard Ferguson of the Plessy vs. Ferguson “separate-but-equal” court case, Brigadier General Harry T.
