These picturesque mountains on the Big Island are the oldest range in Hawaii dating back more than a million years. The Kohala Mountains, which are actually a volcano that erupted more than 120,000 years ago, make up nearly six percent of the Big Island. The island's north side has been separated into the area of North Kohala and South Kohala. The range's highest point is 5,480 feet tall at Kaumu o Kaleihoohie. The mountains cover approximately 234 square miles.
