Krakow's Jewish Quarter known as Kazimierz has been the home of people of Jewish faith for more than 500 years and contains many historic landmarks. King Kazimierz the Great started expelling Jews from Krakow to Kazimierz, which was its own town until the 19th century, in 1495. Jewish people were once again removed from their home of Kazimierz to the nearby Jewish ghetto of Podgorze during World War II and then on to concentration camps. The Jewish community has begun to move back into this historic Krakow quarter. Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" was filmed there a shined an international spotlight on the community. In addition to historic sites, Kazimierz has many restaurants, cafes and stores.
