About Houses of Parliament

Officially called the Palace of Westminster, this landmark Gothic building along the River Thames is where the House of Commons and the House of Lords meet in London's City of Westminster. This important site has been the location of former churches, palaces and even maybe a Roman temple. Palace of Westminster became the official meeting place for British Parliament in 1512 after then King VIII vacated it after a fire. Another fire in 1834 destroyed much of the structure. The "New Palace" was designed by architect Charles Barry and built from 1840-70. Visitors to the Palace of Westminster are able to tour the building as well as watch debates and meetings.
