Once the site of a small tributary in prehistoric times, the water has sense dried up, leaving narrow gorges throughout the park's cliffs. These thin passageways gave the park it's name, Hell's Gate. A smaller park at only 68.25 square kilometres (26 sq mi), Hell's Gate is still a popular area for safari retreats as it welcomes human activity, including hiking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, and camping. The geothermal activity in the landscape has been utilized to build geothermal power stations throughout the park.
