Domingo Ghirardelli first purchased the city block in the city's Fisherman's Wharf area in 1893 to be the Ghirardelli Chocolate Co. base, but the headquarters were moved when Golden Grain Macaroni Co. purchased the chocolate company and the land was put up for sale. William M. Roth bought the property in 1962 to convert it into a retail area and is regarded as the first successful reuse enterprise in the United States. Ghirardelli Square today has a mix of restaurants and boutiques, an art gallery, a winery and Ghiradelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
