This charming historic district running 16 1/2 blocks in Downtown San Diego is lined with gas lamps and Victorian buildings is a hot spot for tourists and local alike. Gaslamp Quarter was established in 1867 by developer Alonzo Horton in the area known as New Town then renamed Stingaree and originally contained gambling establishments, bars and bordellos. The quarter was redeveloped beginning in the 1970s and was designated a United States Historic District. It now features many restaurants, stores and nightclubs in beautifully restored structures. Gaslamp Quarter hosts numerous events such as ShamROCK, Taste of Gaslamp and Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp.
