The original structure was built in 1876 and designed by architects McKean and Fairweather in Second Empire style with an administrative wing was added in 1977. Fredericton City Hall has a chiming clock, a fountain and artistic tapestries displayed in Council Chambers. The latter were created by artists Gertrude Duffie and Dr. Ivan Crowell illustrating the town's history to commemorate Fredricton's 200th birthday as the capital of New Brunswick. The city building is a National Historic Site of Canada.
