Once the historical residence of the King of Spain, El Escorial is one of Spain's royal sites. El Escorial has functioned as a monastery, royal palace, school and museum, and is currently a popular visiting attraction, attracting more than 500,000 tourists each year. It is currently the property of the Heironymite monks and is now the monastery of the Order of Saint Augustine.
