The city of El Calafate is located on the southern border of Lake Argentino, in the southwest part of the Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It serves as a center of activity for those visiting Los Glaciares National Park. Originally a sheltering place for wool traders, the town was officially founded in 1927 but only flourished after the creation of the nearby Perito Moreno National Park in 1937, which fostered development.
