Named after author Richard Henry Dana, Jr. who described it and nearby San Juan Capistrano as "the only romantic spot on the coast," this Orange County city has a trendy commercial harbor area, beautiful headlands and pristine beaches. Dana Point was incorporated in 1989 and was a bustling trading port during the 1800s. The harbor contains a replica of the California hide trade vessel Pilgrim. Other notable sites are Capistrano Beach, Dana Point Headlands, Dana Point Harbor and the nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano. The city is popular for surfing and whale watching.
