This imposing brownstone cathedral, the largest in Philadelphia, has a history as fascinating as its façade. Modeled after the Lombard Church of Saint Charles in Rome, Italy, this seat of the city's archdiocese features no windows at street-level to deter vandals during the anti-Catholic riots which consumed the city during its construction. The interior of its iconic blue dome was painted by the same artist as Washington D.C.'s capitol building. Numerous important bishops and clergymen are buried in the crypt located below the main altar. Open daily to visitors, ask a Cathedral Ambassador to take you on a free tour!
