Known to have one of the largest mosaic collections in the Western Hemisphere, this St. Louis cathedral is an architectural wonder. Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis was constructed from 1907-14 to replace the city's former cathedral situated along the Mississippi River. The mosaics, however, weren't finished until 1988 to have a grand total of 41.5 million glass pieces with more than 7,000 colors over an area of 83,000 square feet. The cathedral was designed by architects Barnett, Haynes & Barnett in Neo-Byzantine and Romanesque Revival styles. It contains a museum and gift shop for visitors.
