About Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas

Towering over Cartagena from its strategic position atop the Hill of San Lazaro, the fortress guarded the city from land and sea invasion since 1536. Constructed in a triangular shape, the castle featured a formidable pattern of bunkers, parapets, and artillery batteries that provided the Spanish forces with a powerful defensive position. After the Spanish American Wars for Independence, the castle was claimed by the Colombian government. Today it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
