Along the way we'll pass by the green farmland of Nyang Chu Valley and drive along Yamdrok-tso Lake, a stunning lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We'll also see Karo-la Glacier as we move westwards to arrive at Gyantse, home to the famous Palcho Monastery - which we'll visit - and Tibet's third largest city.

From here we'll drive to the Sakya County where you can visit the famous Sakya Monastery. The most interesting thing in Sakya sect is that the sect does not believe in reincarnation and the head of Sakya sect will wear white cassock and also marry and have children.

Next we'll travel to the world highest pass, Gyatso-la Pass, which is located 5200m above sea level, before arriving at Tingri, the entrance of Himalayan Nature Reserve.

Breakfast is included.

If it is in clear weather, you can see the panorama of Himalaya range and 4 mountains which are 8000m high: Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Qowowuyag (8201m) and Mt Mayalu (8463m), even majestic view of golden summit of Mt. Everest at sunset.

We'll stay at a local guest house near the temple.

Breakfast is included.

The road will travel parallel to the Himalayan ranges and Nepalian sides, also known as the Anapurna ranges. The main road passes through the desolate plain of Digur tang, with its enormous sand dunes and the closely neighboring snow peaks of Shishapangma and langtang to the south.

Leaving the bum-chu basin, we'll descends into the depression of Pelkhu tso Lake (4600m), a cobalt blue lake. Then we'll arrive at Saga, a small town 69km from the Phelgu tso.

Day 08

Saga - Lake Mansarovar - Darchen

Hotel: Local Guest houses (dormitories, 3-5 pax sharing) or similar

We'll continue our journey today towards the Drongpa County, source of the Brahmaputra River, which is about 167km from the Saga town.

Along our way to Darchen, we will make a small detour to Lake Manasarovar, the holy lake of Tibetan and Hinduism. You can relax around the lake shore and experience the natural beauty of the lake. In the summer time, flocks of swans will gather on the lake, bringing grace and life to the area. You can also see so many Tibetans and Hindus praying and circling around the lake shore, snow capped mountains on the background and hundreds of swans gathering on the lake, attracting hundreds and thousands of tourists from all over the world.

In late afternoon, we will reach Tarchen, a small town at the foot of Mt. Kailash. The tour guide will assist tourists to arrange trekking yaks and porters and doing some preparation for your following 3 days trekking around Mt.Kailash.

8 kilometers after leaving Darchen with environment-friendly bus (40 minutes), we'll arrive at a village called Sarshung, where porters are waiting for us. After two hours, we'll come upon a grassy plain populated by nomads. For this turn in the valley it is another two hours at least before reaching Dirapuk (4920m). You'll need to camp or can rest in monastery's guest house.

Day 10
Mount Kailash

Trekking: Dirapuk - Dzultripuk

Hotel: Local Guest Tents (dormitories, 3-5 pax sharing) or similar

The second trekking day is the hardest and most tough circuit with the Dolma-la pass lying 6.4km ahead but 762m above Dirapuk. The peak of Dolma-la pass is about 5630m above sea level, so it is better to set off early in the morning as the sun rays break over the ridges above.

After taking a rest at the peak of Dolma-la pass, you will descend staircase bringing you to Lha Chu valley floor, taking about one hour from the pass. From here it is still four hours trekking to the today's final destination with no shelters on the way. It is better to walk on the right side of the river and finally get to Dzultripuk (with miracle cave of milarepa). It is advisable to get there before other groups because there are limited numbers of rooms in Dzultripuk.

Take a good rest in the guest room and prepare for next morning's departure.

  • To Indian citizens with Indian passport, please refer to the following details.
The Indian travelers with an Indian passport are generally categorized into 2 types when traveling to Tibet: the ordinary Indian citizens who travel to Tibet for visiting the places other than Ali prefecture (Mt. Kailash) get the Tibet Visa and proceed their tours like the usual foreign travelers from all over the world; and the other is the great number of Indian pilgrims who come to Tibet mainly for pilgrimage around Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. In reality, however, as long as Indian travelers who want to travel to Mt. Kailash for pilgrimage or go via Ali prefecture, even if not for religious purposes, they will be treated as pilgrims. If you are an American Indian with a U.S. passport, you won’t be regarded as a pilgrim, even if you go to Mt. Kailash for pilgrimage.
Tibet Visa Application and Tour Organization for the Ordinary Indian Tourists
If you are an ordinary Indian tourists and planning to visit Tibet without heading to Ali prefecture, just email us the photo copy of your passport and Chinese Visa (how to get a Chinese Visa) at least 20 days before your Tibet tour starts. We’ll take care of the rest and organize a lifetime Tibet trip for you with the guaranteed and free Tibet permit application.
About entering Tibet, like most tourists do, you need to reach China firstly and then take the world’s highest Tibet train or fly to Lhasa from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Xining and other cities of China. Check details about how to get to Tibet.
As for the ones who is about to enter Tibet from Nepal, a Group Tourist Visa is required which is issued at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. You just need to email us the scanned copy of your passport in advance and we will do the rest. We have a local office in Kathmandu specially dealing with the Group Tourist Visa for our clients.
Tibet Visa Application and Tour Organization for Indian Pilgrims
Tibet Visa for pilgrims needs to be verified and issued jointly by the Foreign Affairs Office of TAR, Tibet Military Region, Armed Police Tibet Frontier Corps and the Department of Public Security of TAR. Only two organizations can authorize Indian pilgrimage tour in Tibet. One is Foreign Affairs Office of TAR (governmental); the other is Pilgrim Center (non-governmental), short for Tibet-India pilgrim Reception Center, located in Tuanjie New Village of Lhasa. Other organizations and travel agencies are not allowed to receive pilgrims.
As the official agent of Pilgrim Center, Tibet Vista is authorized to provide free Tibet tour consultancy service for Pilgrims. Nevertheless, only the 2 organizations mentioned above can arrange practical Indian pilgrimage tour service (accommodation, transportation, itinerary, guide, yaks, etc.) for Indians travelling to Tibet.
Owing to the monopoly situation of Pilgrim Center, the cost of a pilgrimage tour is much higher than that of other ordinary Tibet tour. However, Indian tourists do not need to pay such high cost, because they have a wide range of choices of travel agencies. Please contact Tibet Vista for free consultancy and our professional Tibet travel consultants will work with you to customize your Tibet tour.
Before the catastrophic Nepal Earthquake in May, 2015, most pilgrims enter Tibet overland from Zhangmu Border (also called “Kodari border” in Nepal). However, the earthquake made the access from Zhangmu Border to Tibet virtually inaccessible. You can take flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa and starting your pilgrimage tour from Lhasa, or fly to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu or other cities of China, then take a Tibet train or flight getting into Lhasa.
Besides, you can also enter Tibet from Purang, a border nearer to Mt. Kailash, for which you have to either trek for three days or take a helicopter service.
  • Tourist with Indian passport and taking pilgrimage trip to Mount Kailash, please check our 14-Day Tibet Adventure: Lhasa, Shigatse, Saga, Lake Manasarovar, Darchen and Mount Kailash Pilgramage.
