Summary of The Day: Explore the South Island’s gorgeous inland and coastal scenery on a full-day excursion from Dunedin. In the morning, travel aboard the Taieri Gorge Railway through stunning mountain landscapes followed by the dramatic scenery of the rugged Otago Peninsula.
We presents to you the jewels of Otago, a tour that combines two of Dunedin’s favorite attractions – the Taieri Gorge Railway and the Otago Peninsula. After being collected by your guide you’ll be taken to the iconic Dunedin Railway Station where you’ll have time to enjoy this architectural masterpiece before you board the train.
Traveling in a historic wooden train carriage, you’ll follow the course of the Taieri river, climbing towards the Taieri Gorge. You’ll travel through almost a dozen tunnels and pass over several viaducts before you arrive at Pukerangi where you can stretch your legs and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. A visit to Dunedin is not complete without a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway - one of the world's great train trips. The train trip is approximately 4 hours.
Lunch is not included however we can provide a gourmet 'picnic lunch' on request, it includes a chicken or ham sandwich, cake, cheese and crackers, fruit, crisps and bottled water.. Alternatively, there is a buffet cart on board with a good selection of sandwiches, pies, sausage rolls etc. If you have any dietary requirements please let us know.
Your guide will be waiting for you at the Dunedin Railway Station when you get back. Returning you to your comfortable minibus, the tour shifts focus to the wonderful Otago Peninsula where you’ll spend the rest of the afternoon.
The Otago Peninsula has some of the finest beaches in New Zealand and an intriguing coastline carved by the southern rollers. Our guide will take you to the remote parts of the Otago Peninsula where you’ll enjoy several photo stops to capture the spectacular panoramas.
We’ll return to the city via the low road, weaving in and out of bays, through villages and communities before arriving back at Port Chalmers with plenty of time to spare.
