Summary of The Day: This is one of San Francisco's loveliest landmarks and the story of its transformation from ferry depot to culinary cornucopia lies at the heart and soul of the California identity.
Once the main terminal for commuter ferry traffic, this magnificent building and clock tower has been lovingly restored to its former glory since the 1906 earthquake. Inside you will find coffee, flowers, wine, tea, herbs, local organic produce, cheeses, breads, chocolates and international cuisine, as well as produce brought in from no more than a mile or two away. Here you'll discover restaurants that embrace the sustainable philosophy that makes California a leader in food culture.
The farmers market is open three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the smaller markets occupy the front of the building along the Embarcadero. On Saturdays, the much larger market is held both in front of the Ferry Building and in the rear plaza overlooking the bay. The markets offer fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, meats and eggs from small regional farmers and ranchers, many of whom are certified organic. Among the wealth of products for sale are regional artisan specialties such as breads, cheeses and jams. The Thursday market features an array of artisan street food: wood-fired pizza, grilled meats, sandwiches and tacos, while the Saturday market also includes hot, delicious meals prepared by local restaurants.
On days with no outdoor market we'll spend more time in Ferry Building Marketplace, and depending on the day of the week, may even sample some wines.
