Cruising The Galapagos On The Galapagos Odyssey

Day 1 - Arrive in Quito, Ecuador. Arrive in Quito, where you will be met by your Local Host.
Day 2 - Quito. Your private city TOUR showcases the rich legacy left by the Incas and, later, the Spaniards. See Independence Square, dominated by its formidable Cathedral, San Francisco Plaza Church, and the Basilica with its marvelous stained-glass windows. (B)
Day 3 - Quito - San Cristobal (Embarkation) - Galapagos Cruising: San Cristobal Island. Upon arrival, transfer to the CERRO COLORADO TORTOISE RESERVE, where you will learn about the island's giant tortoise population and measures taken to help preserve and breed these endangered species. The center includes a large corral, a visitor's center, breeding center and an interpretative trail. Along this trail it is possible to see different species of native and endemic plants as well as birds like the San Cristobal Mockingbird, Yellow Warblers, many species of finch, and the Galapagos flycatcher. Next, continue to Puerto Chino beach and enjoy the view at El Mirador before boarding the Galapagos Odyssey for your 5-night cruise. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Cruising: Española Island. At PUNTA SUAREZ, look for the waved albatross, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and Galapagos hawks. This rocky land spot sustains one of the most impressive and varied colonies of sea birds in the Galapagos. Along its southern shore, high cliffs rise up from the sea affording the visitor spectacular views of soaring birds and the impressive blowhole that shoots water up 50 feet. Other wildlife includes Sally Lightfoot crabs, sea lions, marine iguanas, and lava lizards. Later, visit GARDNER BAY, which has an excellent beach for snorkeling where you can see manta rays, green sea turtles, and the occasional shark! (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Cruising: Floreana Island. Arrive at PUNTA CORMORANT, where you will see flamingos, stilts, pintail ducks, and several species of finch. This site is home to one of the best Flamingo lagoons in the Galapagos; it is situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintail ducks and other migratory birds. The beaches on this island are distinct: The "Green Beach" is named so due to its green color, which comes from a high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the "Four Sand Beach" is composed of white coral. This afternoon, visit POST OFFICE BAY and see the famous wooden barrel that was placed here in 1793 to serve as a post office. The idea is to leave your own postcards or letters in the barrel and take with you any that you can hand deliver. Apart from being the site of the Post Office, this was the landing area for some of the first colonists. Continue to the north of the island and will ascend an elevated slope to enjoy a beautiful vista at BARONESS LOOKOUT. It is said that Baroness Eloisa von Wagner loved this place and spent several hours watching the horizon. Within walking distance are ruins of her house. From this lookout, the landscape covers the coastline from the Enderby Islet to Post Office Bay, as well as the flamingo lagoon and wide Palo Santo forest. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - Cruising: Santa Fe & Plaza Islands. SANTA FÉ is home to endemic species, like the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, and one of the islands' two species of lands iguanas. There are some theories which assert this could be the oldest island in the Archipelago. After disembarkation in the beautiful, clear waters you will be in contact with one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail many salt bushes can be seen as well giant prickly pear cactus, gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. After a walk with your Naturalist, where you will enjoy impressive scenic views, snorkel with the playful sea lions and tropical fish. On PLAZA ISLAND, see the hybrid iguanas, a result of crossing a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. They are unique, recognizable at first glance by their black/gray color, with a land iguana's crest, but face and tail of the marine iguana. The big population of iguanas is due to the presence of tunas, their favorite food. Swallow Tailed Gulls nesting in the rugged cliffs are seen along with other sea bids as: Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds and brown pelicans. South Plaza is also blessed with amazing landscapes of steep cliffs and bright, contrasting colors, with the surrounding waters and the characteristic plant - the Sesuvium. During the rainy season its color is a greenish to yellowish tone and in the dry season (end of June through January) a bright red. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - Cruising: North Seymour & Santa Cruz Islands. A walk on NORTH SEYMOUR reveals a large male population of magnificent frigate birds trying to attract a mate by inflating their bright red throat sacs. Other fauna found here include blue-footed boobies, land iguanas, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas. This island was formed by a series of submarine lavas containing layers of sediment that were uplifted by tectonic activity, and is characterized by its arid vegetation. Visit LAS BACHAS on Santa Cruz Island, which is a major nesting site for sea turtles. There is a nearby lagoon that often has flamingos and other migratory birds. Also see two barges abandoned by the U.S. during WWII when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategic point to protect the Panama Canal. (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Cruising: Mosquera Islet & Baltra Island (Disembarkation) - Guayaquil. At MOSQUERA ISLET, see a large population of sea lions, shorebirds, and Sally Lightfoot crabs. Located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour, this reef of rocks and coral (the result of an uprising) is only 160 meters across at its narrowest width. Afterward, head to Baltra for your flight to Guayaquil. (B)
Day 9 - Guayaquil. Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. (B)

  • Back in 1793, a group of whalers places a wood barrel on Floreana Island and deemed it a "post office." Ever since then, the site, now called Post Office Bay, has been used as an official post office. On this vacation, visit Post Office Bay and bring a few post cards of your own to drop in the barrel. But make sure and sift through the cards and letters in the barrel to see if you can find any with addresses near your home that you can hand deliver. This is, after all, how the mail here gets delivered!
