Day 01
Ecuadorian Amazon

Tena - Itamandi Ecolodge

Our tour starts at the Arajuno Bridge in Tena at 3:00pm, however you may purchase a transfer from Quito for an additional fee or self-transfer to the departure point.

Once you arrive we'll start our trip to Itamandi EcoLodge at the Arajuno Bridge, where we will take a motorized canoe going upstream for 20 minutes to begin our great experience in the tropical forest. On this ride you can appreciate the magic and beauty of the Amazon rainforest driving along a zigzag river that flows in the jungle like a giant snake, considered the vein system of the Pacha Mama (mother Earth).

Once we arrive at the dock area of Itamandi EcoLodge, the resident manager will greet you with a delicious welcome drink. From there we will continue to relax in the bar area with a snack and a short briefing will be held with general information about the lodge and activities, provided by one of our naturalist guides.

At 6:30pm we'll begin our night walk (optional). A flashlight and camera are the most important tools on this night excursion, which allows us to hear the nocturnal sounds and to look for fishing bats, owls, some insects, tarantulas, toads and frogs, and possibly snakes. If the sky is clear, we might have the chance to do some stargazing.

Dinner we'll be served at 7:30pm.

Day 02
Ecuadorian Amazon

Itamandi Ecolodge

In the early morning (5:45 am – 6:00 am, if the climate it permits) we'll take a canoe ride for 15 minutes upstream to visit a parrot clay lick (Saladero) to appreciate a unique site where parrots and parakeets gather in order to obtain the minerals that will help them to digest the fruits or seeds they have consumed. Hundreds of parrots and parakeets will approach the treetops and later will come down to the clay bank to eat this soil rich in minerals. It is essential to have binoculars to enjoy it.

Breakfast we'll be served between 7:00am – 8:30am.

At 9:00am or 9:30am, we'll head out for a hike through the primary and secondary Rainforest. Our expert naturalists teach you about the ecology and flora and fauna of the Rainforest along the trail. You will observe a great variety of insects, a diversity of birds flying around us and with some luck reptiles or monkeys. This activity takes about 2 ½ -3 hours.

Then we'll return to Itamandi EcoLodge for lunch and a siesta.

At 3:00pm it is time to enjoy a cultural activity. An Amazonian Kichwa community will receive us and we learn about their way of life and the interaction they have with the forest. This encounter is going to show you that part of the Amazonia that you do not find on the maps: the Amazon people.

Part of our visit to the community involves the demonstration of the famous “Chicha”, a fermented yucca drink that has become part of their festivals and daily use. We will take part in the preparation of this beverage and also try some of the local cuisine.

We'll finish the visit with a traditional dance performed by the kids in this community and you also have some time to buy some handicrafts, made by the indigenous. This little business is to support the indigenous people in their daily life.

Dinner will be served at 7:30pm.

Day 03
Ecuadorian Amazon

Itamandi Ecolodge

Today we'll rise for an 8:00am breakfast before our 9:00am visit to “Isla Anaconda” and “Amazoonico”

From the lodge we'll take a 40 min canoe ride downriver to visit the “Isla Anaconda”. We can observe the prehistoric bird “Hoatzin”, woolly monkeys, squirrel monkeys, just to mention a few. We also visit a family in one of the indigenous communities to learn about their farming habits, medicinal plants, as well as the ancestral way of hunting with blowguns (cerbatana) and handmade traps in the forest.

On this trip a delicious box lunch will be provided.

After lunch we will go to AmaZOOnico, which is sheltering a number of different animals, some in danger of extinction. AmaZOOnico is not a zoo but a rescue center for animals of the Amazon in Ecuador. We can observe a wide variety of monkeys, macaws, ocelots, capybara, toucans, parrots and much more animals in their natural habitat at close range.

Afterwards we'll return to the lodge to relax and enjoy dinner at 7:30pm.

An ecological place to switch off and enjoy pure nature

I definitely recommend this lodge as it was one of the best experiences we had! We spent only one night at Itamandi but it was more than worth travelling from Quito because of one night (even the journey is a great experience and scenery...). On the next day we paid for an additional programme (jungle hike) and lunch to spend more time at Itamandi. You can reach Itamandi only by a canoe which takes you away deeper into the forest, unlike other lodges in proximity which are located by the main road. We stayed in the room with a river view, absolutely amazing!!! The hotel is ecologically-built and has a great architecture. The stay reminds you of how important it is to preserve nature and that there are people in the world who really protect their Mother Earth. Our guide, Franklin, was extremely friendly, smiley, and informative. It was one of the strongest life experiences to hike through the jungle, hear about how the local communities use various plants to survive in the nature, experience a healing ritual, see poisonous spiders etc... We did not manage to see the parrots as it started raining a lot but we did not mind it at all, it does not really matter what you get to see as long as you are in this place. Also we already saw more than enough animals at the Galapagos a week before. The pool is lovely and the food is incredible, we did not expect to receive such a superb treatment in a jungle! There is of course no wifi but you cannot expect to have internet in a jungle, electricity is already a luxury from my point of view. Read full review

    A wonderful place to stay

We stayed at Itamandi Lodge in May - it was an excellent time. The lodge is really comfortable and the staff there is professional and welcoming and very helpful. The rooms were lovely; the food was very high standard and plenty of it. We w...ere lucky to be in a small group of 5 (3 of us and another couple) and our guide, Yaku, was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. The treks were excellent and his information and local knowledge was really great, also his English was really good too. I would totally recommend staying here. Read full review

    Enjoy the selva

This Lodge caters for perfect food (I am vegetarian and they catered truly great food), quiet and relaxed tranquility after sometimes intensive walks. For the excursions they have perfect guides available. Lodge can only be reached by boat ...which makes it all even more fun. No WiFi, of course, this is in the middle of nature. Read full review
