Summary of The Day: A quick jaunt from Karakoey on the world's second-oldest funicular takes you to the heart of Istanbul's food scene. Taste the complex and rewarding flavors of local specialties as we wander through secluded lanes and alleyways. Learn about local culinary traditions as your guide tells you the ingredients and origins of Turkey's most popular dishes.
We'll begin our food tour with some boerek, a delicious flaky pastry consisting of several thin layers filled with cheese, potato or meat. Wash it down with a cup of ayran, a yogurt drink considered by many to be the national beverage of Turkey.
Next, we'll take part in a true local tradition: some drinks, snacks and good conversation with friends at the end of a long work day. Pull up a seat at a traditional meyhane (tavern) and converse with the locals over a plate of meze and a glass of raki. Learn about the fascinating history of the Turkish tavern and the dishes traditionally served there.
You'll get an opportunity to digest all of this yummy food at a teahouse once frequented by the Young Turks, the group that agitated for multi-party, democratic reform in the early 20th century.
Hungry from all the conversation? Satisfy your appetite with a snack from a street food cart, including icli kofte (deep-fried meatballs) and midye dolma (mussels stuffed with rice). Cleanse the palate with Turkish delight in historic Cicek Passage before grabbing some baklava and cikolata (chocolate) or ice cream from Maras.
No visit to Istanbul is complete without a stop at Taksim Square, where late-night revelers flock for the delicious Islik Burger, guaranteed to satisfy even the most famished!
We'll conclude our tour at an alfresco cafe and local haunt with awesome street art and graffiti. Order a coffee and bring out the chocolate and baklava. Stay longer to experience the streets of Istanbul after dark.
