Inti Raymi / Cusco

Hotel: Local Hotel or similar

Every year the Inca would celebrate the winter solstice in honor of their most venerated God, the Sun (Inti). We’ll follow the wild celebrations and dancing as they move from the Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun), the Plaza de Armas, and finally on to the Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman. All along, you’ll have the assistance of a guide to explain the intricacies of the ceremony.

Inti Raymi
The Inti Raymi party was a ceremony practiced by the Inca in honor of their sun god or called Inti (Quechua), this ceremony was the most important of the Inca empire, since the sun was their maximum deity, This ceremony was held in the capital of the empire of Tawantinsuyo (Cusco) and held each winter solstice.

There were several reasons that led the Inca civilization to make sacrifices and offerings to the Sun. One was the Inca. As Cuzco nobility, they were considered as the natural children of the Sun and thus sacrifices and offerings were made in accordance to important solar events such as solstices. Times of harvest were also important as if the corn crop was good, they had to be thankful and if it was bad, they had to beg for the coming year to compensate them with good production.

In June (winter solstice), the sun was going away, the cold increased and the early mornings were frosty, therefore they had to ask the sun to come back and to stay harnessed to the Inti huatana (much like a sun dial which served as a hitching post for the sun) to preserve light and warmth instead of moving continually northward. Finally, we had to show him, the god Inti, eternity and total surrender of their children, with submission and respect.

More than six centuries ago, the Inca Pachakuteq instituted the Feast of the god Sol Cusqueños currently still celebrated as Inti Raymi with the same fervor with which their ancestors performed in the splendid times of the empire.

The contemporary version of Inti Raymi is from June 24, 1944 when the festivities were instituted in the city in memory of their ancient origin and cradle of the Great Inca Civilization.

The festival in honor of the Sun God, is currently performed in the three historical and natural scenarios that are usually used:

• The Qorikancha (Golden Sanctuary): In the Inca era was the main temple dedicated to the sun. This is where the whole ceremony begins. At 8:00 am appears the Sinchi, (General of the Inca Army), then the Imperial Army and then the Acclas (women chosen), follow the t'ika t'aqaqkunas (women who throw flowers to the ground for the passage of the inka ) And the pichaqkunas (men who clean the ground), all to the son of pututos, quenas, tinyas, where the Inca and his wife (Qoya) appear, followed by his royal entourage and nobility, accompanied by the high priest (willaq Umu ), The Inca in ceremony performs an Andean offerings to the sun god, then they go to the Plaza de Armas of Cusco.

• The Plaza de Armas (the ancient Auqaypata or Hill of the weeping): During the incanate, in this immense square the ceremony was completely developed in the middle of the great ushnu or ceremonial platform. The second act of the Inti Raymi (and one of the most awaited in Cusco) takes place in the Plaza de Armas of the Imperial City At 10:00 am. As far as the Inca came to address his father the Sun and fellow citizens. In the usnu (upper part) built in the middle of the square, the Inca will go in Quechua to the Sun, who orders him to do a t'ínku (fortune-telling with coca leaves). The ceremony concludes with the demand of a sacrifice of the sun god. Then the Inca will address all, citing that it will fulfill the will of the Sun and that for it will go to Sacsayhuamán.

• Saqsaywaman (voice deriving from the Quechua words "saqsay" and "waman" which translates into Spanish means "sacíate hawk"). This impressive archaeological center is located at 3,555 m.s.n.m., one kilometer from the Inca district of Qolqanpata. It is here where the most important traditions of this festival are celebrated.

At: 12:00 pm:
• Ceremonial site.
• Report of the 4 Suyus or Regions: Qollasuyu, Kuntisuyu, Antisuyu and Chinchaysuyu.
• Rite of the Chicha (Inca drink).
