Summary of The Day: Welcome to Reykjavik!
Upon arrival you'll take the FlyBus airport buses from the Arrival Hall to transfer to your hotel. You'll receive a copy of a FlyBus Plus transfer ticket before your arrive that you can show to the bus's attendant to transfer to your hotel.
If you arrive early in the day, you might want to explore Reykjavik's old town, location of many museums and galleries. You might also enjoy visiting one of the city's outdoor geothermal swimming pools where you can shake off your jet lag. In the afternoon, you could take one of our day tours, such as whale watching or horseback riding, both bringing you close to Iceland's nature and landscape.
Summary of The Day: After a complimentary breakfast today, you'll join a scenic tour to the nearby Eyjafjallajokull volcano, one of the most famous volcanoes in Iceland and the world. Here we'll visit the Thorvaldseyri Volcano Centre and learn about the 1010 volcanic eruption and its impact the global ecosystem and weather.
From here we'll continue on a trip along Iceland's South Shore, one of the most spectacular regions in Iceland during the winter season due to the blend of snow and volcanic activity. Along the way we'll stop at the stunning Seljalandsfoss, a unique waterfall that you can easily walk behind to take the perfect photo. Next up, we'll visit another impressive waterfall, Skogafoss, who's powerful cascade supposedly hides ancient treasure.
We'll continue past geothermal landscapes and picturesque Icelandic farms to the world famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara. Take a stroll along this unique beach to discover the complex and enchanting rock formations along the shore.
We'll then arrive in the town of Vik where we'll spend the night.
Summary of The Day: Following breakfast we'll head to the Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe's largest glacier, which encompasses 14% of Iceland's land mass. Here we'll visit the the Skaftafell region, a gorgeous mixture of glaciers and volcanoes as well as Iceland's mystical ice caves.
Now, get ready for a thrilling experience, as we descend into one of these amazing ice caves after suiting up glacier and ice cave hiking equipment. Follow your glacier guide, a highly qualified mountain and ice cave specialist, as they lead you through the gorgeous underground halls. Make sure to bring your camera to immortalize the otherworldly features found here.
We'll visit one cave during this trip, chosen by your guide based on the weather, season, time of day, and other factors. Whichever one you select we're sure you'll be amazed by this untouched natural region.
After this exciting day, return to your hotel near Vik for the evening.
Your waterproof hiking boots will be very important, since you will need to hike to the cave, sometimes using ice crampons. Remember to dress for the conditions. You will be in the ice cave for at least 45 minutes, in very cold temperatures.
• Gear: During the ice cave tour, you will be provided with all necessary glacier hiking equipment, including crampons, helmet and harness. Your guide will assess the conditions and hand out the equipment necessary for each tour. Crampons available for shoe sizes starting from European-35 or US-4.
• Backpack: We recommend you bring a backpack on the Ice Cave excursion. This is for personal items that you might take on the day tour (extra clothes, snacks and bottled water). One backpack for two people should be sufficient.
• Clothing: Dressing for Icelandic winter weather is crucial to enjoy this trip. Start with:
a) a thin layer, like thermal long underwear and a T-shirt;
b) followed by fleece, wool or polyester sweater and pants;
c) finish with waterproof, wind resistant coat/snow pants for outerwear. Do not wear jeans.
• Shoes: It's extremely important to wear good, waterproof hiking boots that cover your ankle. Trainers or sneakers are not appropriate footwear. (Hiking boots can be rented during tour.)
• Bring: Please bring a warm hat and gloves. Your hat should be able to fit comfortably under a helmet. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also essential, as the sun reflects off glaciers and snow.
Summary of The Day: Today we'll get in touch with the warmer side of Iceland by traveling along the famous Golden Circle route. This tour is a must for anyone visiting Iceland.
First, we'll kick things off with a visit to the famous geothermal fields of Haukadalur Valley just outside of Reykjavik, otherwise known as the home to the Great Geysir, who names inspired European explorers to name all geothermal geysers after it. Walk past bubbling mud pools and active hot springs, such as the impressive Strokkur geyser.
From here we'll visit the next major feature of the Golden Circle tour, Gullfoss waterfall. This 104 foot (32 m) waterfall is extremely popular and lovely in winter when the frost traps the falls mid-fall.
Then, we'll arrive at the last leg of our Golden Circle tour, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Thingvellir National Park. This spectacular national park is lovely any time of the year, featuring untouched fields of snow in winter or vibrant plantlife in summer. It also holds an important place in Icelandic heritage as the site of the world's oldest parliament.
We'll end the day back in Reykjavik.
Summary of The Day: Now that you've spent some time exploring Iceland's amazing natural features you'll enjoy a welcoming tour around the nation's capital, Reykjavik.
First, we'll head to the amazing Perlan platforms to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Afterwards we'll see the gorgeous Reykjavik coast and the Hofdi house, site of the 1986 summit between former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and former U.S.S.R. Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev.
Then we'll see another icon of Reykjavik, the magnificent Hallgrimskirja Church.. The designer Guðjón Samúelsson was inspired by the basalt lava columns found throughout the country (some of which you may have already seen).
Last but not least, we'll visit the city's town center, site of the classic Althingi building and Town Hall
After a long day of traveling we'll relax with a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, who's mineral-rich geothermal water will surely revive you.
The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy Reykjavik. Take in some of its lively bars, fantastic restaurants, and scenic streets.
Make sure to speak to the hotel staff to arrange your FlyBus transfer for your flight home on day 6. We highly suggest you arrange your FlyBus transfer to depart 3 hours before you departing flight from Keflavik Airport.
Summary of The Day: After breakfast, you'll check out of the hotel and transfer to your departing flight via FlyBus. If you flight is later in the day, make sure to spend some more time in the city.
