From here we'll continue on a trip along Iceland's South Shore, one of the most spectacular regions in Iceland during the winter season due to the blend of snow and volcanic activity. Along the way we'll stop at the stunning Seljalandsfoss, a unique waterfall that you can easily walk behind to take the perfect photo. Next up, we'll visit another impressive waterfall, Skogafoss, who's powerful cascade supposedly hides ancient treasure.

Day 03
Vatnajokull Glacier

Vik - Vatnajokull - Skaftafell - Ice Crystal Cave - Vik

Hotel: Icelandair Hotel Vik or similar

Following breakfast we'll head to the Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe's largest glacier, which encompasses 14% of Iceland's land mass. Here we'll visit the the Skaftafell region, a gorgeous mixture of glaciers and volcanoes as well as Iceland's mystical ice caves.

Now, get ready for a thrilling experience, as we descend into one of these amazing ice caves after suiting up glacier and ice cave hiking equipment. Follow your glacier guide, a highly qualified mountain and ice cave specialist, as they lead you through the gorgeous underground halls. Make sure to bring your camera to immortalize the otherworldly features found here.

We'll visit one cave during this trip, chosen by your guide based on the weather, season, time of day, and other factors. Whichever one you select we're sure you'll be amazed by this untouched natural region.

After this exciting day, return to your hotel near Vik for the evening.

Equipment

Your waterproof hiking boots will be very important, since you will need to hike to the cave, sometimes using ice crampons. Remember to dress for the conditions. You will be in the ice cave for at least 45 minutes, in very cold temperatures.

• Gear: During the ice cave tour, you will be provided with all necessary glacier hiking equipment, including crampons, helmet and harness. Your guide will assess the conditions and hand out the equipment necessary for each tour. Crampons available for shoe sizes starting from European-35 or US-4.

• Backpack: We recommend you bring a backpack on the Ice Cave excursion. This is for personal items that you might take on the day tour (extra clothes, snacks and bottled water). One backpack for two people should be sufficient.

• Clothing: Dressing for Icelandic winter weather is crucial to enjoy this trip. Start with:
a) a thin layer, like thermal long underwear and a T-shirt;
b) followed by fleece, wool or polyester sweater and pants;
c) finish with waterproof, wind resistant coat/snow pants for outerwear. Do not wear jeans.

• Shoes: It's extremely important to wear good, waterproof hiking boots that cover your ankle. Trainers or sneakers are not appropriate footwear. (Hiking boots can be rented during tour.)

• Bring: Please bring a warm hat and gloves. Your hat should be able to fit comfortably under a helmet. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also essential, as the sun reflects off glaciers and snow.

Tips:
Ice caves are a rare natural phenomenon, and the weather and conditions around the glaciers are constantly changing. There is a possibility the ice caving tour may need to be cancelled for weather or safety reasons. In this case, alternative activities will be offered.
Day 04
Golden Circle

Vik - Geysir - Gullfoss Waterfall - Thingvellir National Park - Reykjavik

Walk past bubbling mud pools and active hot springs, such as the impressive Strokkur geyser.

From here we'll visit the next major feature of the Golden Circle tour, Gullfoss waterfall. This 104 foot (32 m) waterfall is extremely popular and lovely in winter when the frost traps the falls mid-fall.

Then, we'll arrive at the last leg of our Golden Circle tour, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Thingvellir National Park. This spectacular national park is lovely any time of the year, featuring untouched fields of snow in winter or vibrant plantlife in summer. It also holds an important place in Icelandic heritage as the site of the world's oldest parliament.

We'll end the day back in Reykjavik.
