Summary of The Day: See the beautiful countryside surrounding Dunedin when your cruise ship is in port, on a small-group tour of the Otago Peninsula. This scenic tour takes you to remote lookouts over stunning vistas and gets you up close to wildlife that calls the Otago Peninsula home
Thirteen million years ago, the coastline here convulsed with volcanic activity - creating a landscape of scattered domes and vents now covered with pasture and forest. This ancient volcano was known by Maori as Rakiriri, meaning 'angry sky', and some of the finest vistas of our city can be enjoyed from them. This 75 mile scenic journey takes you over many of these vantage points, and back down to the bays and beaches that surround Dunedin.
We leave Port Chalmers and approach Dunedin from the north, climbing above the harbour for a fantastic view of the Otago Peninsula. The tour is designed to be flexible and perfect for those looking for a relaxing day with fantastic photographic opportunities. As we enter the city we will make brief stops at some of the highlights - including the 'steepest street in the world', Baldwin Street, before taking the high road for views of the harbour.
You will enjoy a couple of short 2-3 minute walks - when we visit two reserves that show the dynamic sand dune environment, and scenic inlets of the Otago Peninsula. We take you through a tunnel of macrocarpa to get the finest view of Cape Saunders, one of only two landmarks Captain James Cook logged in his journal when he surveyed the area.
From there, travel along the gravel roads toPortobello, and stop to admire this leafy residential suburb of Dunedin, overlooking the Dunedin Harbour. You will be given several opportunities to get out of the bus and admire the views, this tour takes you to the finest lookouts Dunedin has to offer. Then conclude your tour with the return journey to Dunedin city or the cruise port at Port Chalmers
Our tours are designed to fit in with the Port Chalmers cruise ship schedule. You may also be dropped off inside the port or the city centre, just let us know your preference on the day of the tour.
