Welcome to Cusco!

Today you'll arrive at the airport and we'll transfer you to your hotel.

Later in the day, you will go on a city tour of Cusco which consists of a visit to its most important landmarks of both the Inca and the Colonial times. During your tour you will visit Qorikancha, also known as the temple of the sun. A catholic monastery, Santo Domingo, was built on the site, partly including the Incan Walls of the Sun Temple. Continue to the Cathedral, considered the best repository of colonial art from the Cusco school. It was built over the palace of the Inca Wiracocha and considered the religious and political center of Cusco during the Inca era.

You will also walk through the Inca Street of Loreto, a fine sample of the old town and its remarkable Inca walls.

Afterwards, you will leave the city to visit the outer parts of Cusco were you can find important ruins of the Inca Empire. Between them the most important is the archaeological park of the fortress-temple Sacsaywaman which shows precise zigzags of massive stone to which centuries could not do any harm.

The “Navel of the Earth” is another name for Cusco, since during the height of the Inca civilisation nearly all pathways led to this capital of the empire. Today, almost every visitor to Peru eventually comes to this city located 11,150 feet above sea level (3,400 meters) and one of the best places to experience the remainders of different ages. You will not only find Incan walls and temples, but also colonial mansions and catholic churches. In combination with the flair of modern Cusco, it is one of the most fascinating cities in the country.

Today we will enjoy a day trip to the Sacred Valley.

We will start with the visit of Awanakancha, a living museum of Andean cameloids including Llamas, Alpacas, and the very rarely seen Vicuñas and Guanucos. Here, you can also learn about the traditional weaving techniques. Awanakancha is a project which main task is the preservation of old weaving techniques typical for the area as well as the support for the local communities involved.

Then we'll continue to the famous Pisac Market located in the town of Pisac in the Sacred Valley. In spite of its great popularity and the crowds of tourists that arrive every day, the market retains its local charm. In one part there are the villagers coming from far away gathering to barter and sell their products.

In the other more touristy section of the market you can buy a wide variety of Peruvian handicrafts such as: carved gourds (mates burilados), ceramics, felt hats, alpaca sweaters and mittens, musical instruments, paintings, antiques, a huge variety of trinkets, and, most of all, weavings and jewelry.

We'll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you'll continue to Ollantaytambo. The impressive fortress thrones protectively above the village, the sight is great. Ollantaytambo is one of the few scenes where the Spaniards lost a battle against the Incas.

Buffet breakfast and lunch are included.

The main market days in Pisac are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The other days, a smaller market is held.
Day 03
Aguas Calientes

Cusco - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Hotel: 3-Star Hotel San Agustin Internacional (standard room), 4-Star Hotel Costa del Sol Ramada Cusco (contemporary room), 5-Star Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel or similar

Today you will be picked up at the hotel and brought to the train station in order to board the train with destination Aguas Calientes, the village at the feet of Machu Picchu. You make your way through the Sacred Valley, the train passing little villages, in the background snow-capped mountains.

Vegetation suddenly changes; you reach Aguas Calientes and board the shuttle bus to the Machu Picchu ruins. Here, you learn more about its discovery and the different theories on how and why it was built, visiting the main plaza, the Temple of Three Windows, the circular tower, the sacred sun dial and the burial grounds. Afterwards, you can stroll through on your own.

We'll have lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to Aguas Calients for your train ride back to Cusco. Upon arrival we'll transfer you back to your hotel.
Machu Picchu
The "lost city of the Incas“ is not only one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, but also the biggest treasure of Perus past and the empire of the Incas. Undiscovered by the Spaniards and forgotten over centuries, it was 1911 that the US-American scientist Hiram Bingham came upon it accidentally. Until today, the ruins leave scientists with numerous questions and riddles on how it was built and for which purpose. Theories vary but one thing is for sure: Machu Picchu is one of the most impressive and exciting places in the world, sublime and majestic on top of the mountain and surrounded by impenetrable rainforest.

Buffet breakfast and lunch are included.
