Summary of The Day: You will be met at San Jose International Airport and transferred to your hotel for the night.
If you arrive between the hours of 9:00am and 9:00pm, a local representative will meet you for a brief welcome meeting before you head out on your own. Should you arrive before or after these hours, a complete welcome packet will be left for you at your hotel.
There are no planned activities, so enjoy the city on your own.
Summary of The Day: We'll begin our journey with a fresh cop of Costa Rican coffee was we tour a local coffee farm to learn the time tested techniques to producing the best coffee in Costa Rica.
After we've been given a jump start we'll depart San Jose for Poas Volcano to see its impressive crater and sulfur fumaroles. From here we'll pass through the rainforest on our way to the Arenal National Park, stopping to see the local wildlife and the spectacular La Paz Waterfall.
We'll arrive in La Fortuna in the evening where you'll be free to relax and enjoy the nearby hot springs.
Summary of The Day: Charge up your camera, bring your binoculars, and set off to spot a variety of birds, reptiles, insects and other animals on a guided tour of Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge.
we'll travel north along the Nicaraguan border and take a boat tour through one of the world's most important wetlands. Keep your camera ready to spot a vast array of plants, birds, reptiles, fish, and mammals. And especially keep your eyes out for the three-toed sloth and Jesus Christ Lizard.
After a long day of exploring, we'll take a relaxing soak in the hot springs around La Fortuna. Fed by the warmth of the Arenal volcano, these therapeutic waters are infused with healing minerals and salts that will give you all the energy for your trip. Let yourself unwind and relax in these mystical waters and enjoy the richness of the clear rainforest air.
Summary of The Day: Today we'll head into the cloud forest and stay in the mountain community of Monteverde. While here opt to visit the cheese factory or butterfly gardens.
Optional Activities - Monteverde Cheese Factory Visit
In search of a more peaceful lifestyle, a group of Quaker dairy farmers settled in Monteverde and by 1953, incorporated the cheese factory producing the country’s first pasteurized cheese. Now the second largest cheese maker in Costa Rica, learn about the production of its 17 varieties, sample Gouda, Swiss, provolone, as well as caramels, milkshakes and ice cream (with flavours that include coffee, coconut, mango and pineapple) and learn how the factory provides work for more than 300 farmers and families in the central highlands.
Summary of The Day: Today we'll take a guided trek 12km (7 mi) off into the lush, thriving cloud forest while keeping an eye out for wildlife, listening to the haunting call of the bellbird, and perhaps catch sight of the brilliant green and red resplendent quetzal. From the Observation Tower we'll receive a fantastic view of this amazing region.
The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for you to enjoy.
Monteverde Coffee Plantation Tour
No trip to Costa Rica is complete without visiting a coffee plantation. Head to Café Monteverde and learn how this fair trade coffee goes from crop to cup. Pick ripe berries, watch how the beans are separated from the husk, then observe the drying and roasting process. Sample and buy some of these excellent beans. The Santa Elena coffee co-op prides itself on sustainable practices: it recycles processing water, uses coffee pulp for fertilizer, and sends plant fibers and husks to make paper.
Monteverde Butterfly Garden Visit
Get close to butterflies, bump into giant bugs, and make friends with hairy eight-legged spiders in this collection of gardens nestled in the mountains of Monteverde. Observe caterpillars, take prize-worthy photos of the iridescent blue morpho butterfly, and check out the leaf-cutter ant colony. The nature centre is home to 30 species of butterfly, a whole bunch of insects, as well as white-faced monkeys, coatis, motmots, and more.
Monteverde Hanging Bridges
Get up high to see the tree tops of Monteverde’s Cloud Forest from a bird’s-eye view. Cross a series of hanging bridges to discover what biologists once required (ropes and pulleys) to glimpse the lush, green vista accented by bromeliads, vines, and orchids. Wonder at this wet canopy, home to 90% of all the organisms in the forest, including thousands of species of birds, small animals, amphibians, and insects.
Summary of The Day: In the afternoon we'll say farewell and transfer back to San Jose, either to the airport or your San Jose accommodations.
