Corning Glass Center Tour
Corning Glass Center Tour
The Corning Glass Center located in Corning, New York, built by the architect Wallace Harrison in 1951; it represented a certain optimism about the future of industry and culture.
Live glass blowing demonstrations are scheduled frequently. At the main entrance of the Corning Glass Center, you may see a window-wall. The window-wall is made of very large frameless glass plates. All glass connections, plates to glass doors, and plates to glass canopies are by point fittings drilled through the glass. The juxtaposition of these glass window wall components to one another will reveal the prismatic and transparent qualities of glass. The purposeful, deliberate, and didactic display of structure and glass plate at the building's entrance, celebrates your passage from exterior to interior, and serves to reveal the exploratory nature of the Glass Center itself.
These buildings represented the "best in architectural design" in their time, and now they are landmarks of American architectural history. The Corning Glass Works is world renowned for their contributions to the art and technology of glass making. The Corning Glass Center and Museum displays a staggering array of glass objects, both artistic and practical, dating from early civilization through the latest communications technologies.
Corning Glass Works now has become nationally known for one of the world's largest selections of kaleidoscopes, paperweights, art glass, and glass animals. Located on Corning's historic Market Street, the store was the focus of a film entitled "Main Street". You may have a chance to see this film. The Corning Glass Center would like to engage, educate and inspire visitors and the community through the art, history and science of glass. You will have a unique opportunity to view and experience glassmaking. The Corning Glass Center displays the best of the collection in a permanent exhibition and arrange temporary exhibitions illustrating particular aspects of the art and history of glass, and in so doing maintain an international reputation for scholarship and research on glass.
