Summary of The Day: Our tour begins in Detroit, at General Motors Headquarters, followed by a visit to the Henry Ford Museum, named after the founder of the Ford Motor Company, America's second-largest carmaker. The collection contains many highly-prized exhibits including John F. Kennedy's presidential limousine, Abraham Lincoln's chair from Ford's Theatre, Thomas Edison's laboratory, the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop, and the Rosa Parks bus. Afterwards we'll make our way to Frankenmuth, a Midwestern town with a decidedly German feel. We'll dine at a popular local restaurant and brewery. Taste their world-famous weinerschnitzel with authentic German beer (own expense).
Summary of The Day: Our morning itinerary includes a drive to the lakeside city of Mackinaw, famous for its breathtaking scenery. Then we'll take the ferry to Mackinac Island, passing under a five mile long suspension bridge connecting the upper and the lower half of Michigan Peninsula. Our tour of the island includes the historic Grand Hotel. Guests of note include five US presidents, Russian prime president Vladimir Putin, inventor Thomas Edison, and author Mark Twain.
Summary of The Day: At the top of our itinerary for Day 3 is Holland, Michigan, characterized by a predominantly Dutch-American culture and heritage. We'll visit Windmill Island Gardens, an oasis at the periphery of the historic downtown area featuring a 250 year-old Dutch windmill, manicured gardens, dikes, canals and picnic areas. Then we'll visit a community of Amish people, who are known for their spartan lifestyle, plain dress, and their refusal to adopt the conveniences of the modern world.
