Day 01
La Paz

La Paz

Hotel: Hotel Sagarnaga or similar

There are no scheduled activities on the first day of the tour. On arrival please ask reception when the pre-departure meeting will be held.

Built in a steep valley that protects the city from the harsh elements of the Altiplano, La Paz is a collection of neighborhoods built upon a series of hills; incredible views are a dime a dozen. Our hotel is very centrally located and just around the corner from the city's colorful indigenous street markets including the fascinating and aptly-named Witches Market, where local women in traditional Cholita dress sell items said to ward off evil spirits. The main square, Plaza Murillo, is also within walking distance. La Paz is possibly the best place to see a traditional pena show of Andean music and dance to local bands playing time-honored instruments such as zamponas (pipes) and charangos (ukuleles).

Meeting point: Hotel Sagarnaga, Calle Sagarnaga no. 326-328, Zona Rosario, La Paz. Please double-check your voucher for necessary details regarding accommodations of the days following. All hotels provided are of a 3 star standard.

Day 02

La Paz - Uyuni

On Day 2 we'll take a plane to Uyuni in the south of Bolivia.

First on the agenda is a visit to the Train Cemetery, where you can see the remains of 19th and early 20th century steam locomotives - a good place for artistic photographs. We will then come to Colchani, the main plant for the iodisation of salt and the best place to observe the methods of salt extraction from the salar. Here ovens are used to dry the salt, which is then formed into cakes.

Occasionally in the rainy season the salt flats become flooded; we may have to modify the itinerary if the flats are not safe to traverse.

Day 03

We'll visit what is claimed to be the largest salt flat in the world, the brilliant and vast Salar de Uyuni. Traveling by 4WD vehicles we'll explore the salt lake and surrounds. The highlight of the day is Fish Island (seasonal). Located in the center of the flats, this hilly outpost is covered in giant cacti amid a flat, white sea of hexagonal salt tiles. We'll stay the night in a hotel by the salt flats, then return to Uyuni for one more night.

Occasionally in the rainy season the salt flats become flooded; we may have to modify the itinerary if the flats are not safe to traverse.

Day 04

Our exploration of Uyuni continues.

Day 05

Potosi was established by the Spanish in 1545 soon after the discovery of a rich vein of silver in a nearby hill, the Cerro Rico. It soon became the world's largest silver producer. Silver from Potosi underwrote the Spanish economy, particularly the monarch's extravagance, for over two centuries. Millions of the indigenous population, and later, African slaves, worked in the mines in appalling conditions. You will have the option of visiting the mines, stopping first at the market to buy gifts such as coca leaves, dynamite and cigarettes. In the mines we'll experience the difficult conditions in which the miners worked, including but not limited to, the sweltering heat. If you'd like to learn more about the history of silver mining you can take a tour of the Moneda, a museum exhibiting coins, artwork, mummies and many other interesting artifacts.

Day 06

Potosi - Sucre

A short journey along new roads brings us to Sucre, the official capital of Bolivia, where by law all buildings are painted white. Founded in 1538, the city still retains much of its colonial charm. Sucre is also famous for its warm and sunny climate. Don't miss the cathedral, where you can see the jewel-encrusted painting of Sucre's patron: the Virgin of Guadalupe. You'll also have the option of visiting the bustling Tarabuco market. For a taste of the locally-grown chilies, sample some of the local specialties sold there.

Day 07

Our exploration of Sucre continues.

Day 08
Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Sucre - Santa Cruz de la Sierra

From Sucre we'll fly to Santa Cruz, arriving in time for a short rest and some sightseeing, before boarding the overnight train to the Pantanal.

Santa Cruz is Bolivia's most populous city, and produces over a third of the country's gross domestic product. It is an important business center and is classed as one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Despite the city's rapid growth, Santa Cruz has managed to preserve much of its local traditions, culture and cuisine, and there are many interesting cultural institutions to visit, ranging from the Noel Kempff Mercado Natural History Museum to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The city's main square, Plaza 24 de Septiembre, is surrounded by attractive colonial-style buildings and is a nice play to enjoy a coffee and people-watch.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra - Pantanal Wetlands

Day 11

Pantanal Wetlands

The Amazon may have all the fame and glory, but if it's a safari you're after, then the Pantanal Wetlands are just for you.The wetlands are home to at least 400 species of fish, around 100 species of mammal, 80 species of reptile, and 650 species of bird - heaven on earth for avid birdwatchers. Giant river otters, anacondas, iguanas, jaguars, ocelots, cougars, crocodiles, marsh deer, armadillos, giant and lesser anteaters, black howler monkeys and zebu bulls are all known to inhabit the region, although seeing all these is unlikely due to the immense scale of the Pantanal ecosystem.

We'll stay in the Miranda Province, deep in the Pantanal. The area surrounding the lodge contains many natural springs which help to sustain and nourish the surrounding flora and fauna. On nature walks, boat rides and 4WD excursions out into the Pantanal, you might spot the maned wolf, giant anteater, pampas deer, white-lipped peccary, tapir, puma and more.

After arrival and check-in we'll take a walk through open land, marshy areas or dense forest, great for wildlife and bird watching.

The exact itinerary will be tailored to arrival/departure time, time of year, and weather forecast.
Day 12

Pantanal Wetlands

On Day 12 we'll spend the day exploring the Pantanal by safari, on foot, and by boat to get the best overview of the various ecosystems the Pantanal sustains. On our final day in the park, we will go fishing for our lunch.

Day 13
Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro has many things to see and do. A highlight for many is experiencing the majestic gaze of Christ the Redeemer at the top of Corcovado. You can also enjoy the panoramic views from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and the vibrant colored tiles of the Selaron staircase. You can walk from the top of the staircase up to the quiet hill-top neighborhood of Santa Teresa, with many quaint cafes and shops lining the cobblestone streets. In the city center, you can stroll around Rio's old colonial buildings and wander through the skyscrapers of the financial district. Alternatively, you may like to visit the Botanical Gardens, a world-famous beach, or the beautiful Rodrigues de Freitas Lagoon. If you are in Rio de Janeiro around February or March, get ready for the world's biggest party, the Rio Carnival.
