Athens

Prepare yourself for an exciting journey through 10 countries in 2 weeks as we travel throughout the Balkans!

Beginning in Athens, you will self-transfer to Crystal City Hotel. Check in between 2:00pm and 5:00pm to meet your guide. If you arrive before these times, you may find an information sheet in the lobby. After checking in, feel free to relax at the hotel or explore this ancient and fascinating city on your own.

In the evening we'll enjoy our first group dinner where you'll meet your fellow travelers.

Day 02
Kalambaka

Athens - Delphi - Kalabaka

We'll begin our epic journey to day as we travel north through Greece.

First, we'll visit Delphi, an ancient Greek town that was once considered the “omphalos” (navel) of the earth, and the place where people from around the world would visit in order to receive an oracle from Pythia. Here we'll have the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians and the museum of Delphi.

Later this afternoon we’ll arrive in Kalabaka, ready to explore Meteora tomorrow morning!

Day 03
Ohrid

Kalambaka - Meteora - Ohrid

Make sure to bring your camera along for our full day tour of Meteora!

These dramatic ‘columns of the sky’ were settled on by monks from the 11th century, and by the 1400s there were 24 in total. While here, we’ll visit St. Stephen's Monastery, which was founded in 1400 by St. Antoninus Cantacuzene and is now a nunnery.

From Meteora we'll travel into Macedonia and spend the night at the undiscovered jewel of Ohrid. A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the shores of Lake Ohrid, this city is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, and is notable for once having had 365 churches, one for each day of the year. To finish off the day we'll enjoy an included dinner this evening.

Tirana

This morning we’ll leave Macedonia for its Balkan neighbor Albania, driving onto the capital city, Tirana.

In a story typical of many cities in this part of Europe, Tirana has undergone a remarkable transformation, shaking off communism to become a vibrant, fun city. You’ll be introduced to the city on a walking tour, from the buildings painted in bright colors, to the architecture influenced by the Ottomans, Italians and of course communism. Along the way we'll visit Skanderbeg Square, Tiirana Clock Tower, Et’hem Beu Mosque, National Historical Museum, National Gallery of Arts and Tabak Bridge.

This evening, we will stay at a resort, where dinner will be included.

Dubrovnik

Tirana - Budva - Kotor - Dubrovnik

Continuing our journey north we'll say farewell to Albania and cross the border into Montenegro.

The first stop on our journey today is the picturesque coastal town of Budva, known for its well preserved medieval walled city, which you will have some free time to explore. Afterwards we'll enjoy a rest stop at Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage City. Gaze in wonder at the old port of Kotor, surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period, and the picturesque Mediterranean landscape.

Next, we'll enter the world renowned walled city of Dubrovnik in Croatia, where your tour leader will take you on a walking tour of the old town to see the Franciscan Monastery, Dominican Monastery, Cathedral, Onofrio fountain, Orlando’s column, Sponza Palace, Rector’s Palace, Stradun and the iconic City Walls.

Dubrovnik

Enjoy a free day to explore this historic city, famous for hosting scenes from the hit shoe 'Game of Thrones.'

Want the best views of the ‘old town’ and islands? Catch the cable car to the top of Mount Srdj and enjoy! It is highly recommended for a scenic sunset photo or two. Visit one of the city’s many museums; the Maritime Museum is one of the most popular, or maybe just browse the shops, including the traditional jewelery shops where you can find unique handmade silver or gold jewelry.

Mostar

Dubrovnik - Mostar - Northern Croatias

Crossing the border once again for a day trip, we'll travel to Croatia's neighbor, Bosnia-Herzegovina, where we'll visit the town of Mostar.

A romantic and historical town, Mostar offers a variety of sites to visit, including the many buildings influenced by Roman and Ottoman styles.

After your time in Mostar, the coach will travel back into Croatia for an overnight stay.

Ljubljana

Croatia - Plitvice Lakes - Ljubljana

Your adventure continues as we explore one of the most stunning hidden treasures in all of Europe: Plitvice Lakes National Park.

These internationally renowned cascading lakes, waterfalls and dynamic landscape will make the perfect background for a Croatia postcard, so don't forget your camera. Stroll along the boardwalks, marvel at the incredible natural scenery of Croatia’s largest national park, and see numerous rare animals!

After this excursion into Europe's wild side, we'll visit another country as we head into the pint-sized city of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Here we'll follow a local guide on a walking tour of this fairytale city, pointing out the numerous bridges and brilliantly preserved baroque, gothic and medieval architecture of the medieval old town, Preseren Square, City Centre, the Riverfront, Dragon Bridge and Cobblers Bridge.

Budapest

Ljubljana - Budapest

From Slovenia we'll enter Hungary, spending the day in the capital, Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Home to numerous World Heritage Sites, such as the popular geothermal spas, Budapest rests on the enchanting Danube River.

We'll see many of its great highlights on a guided sightseeing tour, including Gellert Hill, the Citadel, Heroes Square, Budapest Parliament, St Stephen Basilica, the Hungarian State Opera, Castle District, Andrassy Avenue, Matthias Church, and Fisherman's Bastion.

Afterwards you'll be free to explore on your own or you can join an optional visit to the Széchenyi Medicinal Bath (admission not included), one of the most famous icons of the city and Europe’s largest medicinal bath.

Day 10
Budapest

Budapest

Enjoy a full day to explore Budapest on your own. Whether you visit one of the great attractions we spotted yesterday for a more in-depth experience or develop your own itinerary through the city you're bound to fall in love with this historical and dazzling city.

Look out for remnants of the conflicts of WWII and the uprising of 1956, try Hungarian cuisine (so much more to it than just goulash), sample world-renowned wines, and soak your weary rambler’s bones in one of the city’s bath-houses – something Budapest has been known for since the Roman times, with some 123 thermal and 400 mineral springs from 14 different sources. Then, maybe catch the sunset with an evening stroll along the Danube.

Belgrade

Budapest - Belgrade

As we bid adieu to Budapest and Hungary we'll travel to the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.

Upon arrival we’ll enjoy a sightseeing tour with a local guide to visit Republic Square, Bohemian Quarter (Skadarlija), Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade fortress.

Sofia

Belgrade - Nis - Sofia

Hotel: Ramada Sofia City Centre or similar

From the capital we'll travel to a historic city in south-eastern Serbia: Nis. Once ruled by the Turks from the 14th-19th centuries, this classical city has numerous fascinating attractions dating back to the Ottoman Empire. Included with your trip is a visit to the Tower of Skulls.

From here we'll travel into Bulgaria, spending the evening in the capital of Sofia, where we'll enjoy a walking and driving tour of the city.

Sofia

Today, take the day to introduce yourself to Sofia and forge your own itinerary through the city. A young and city, the capital combines a pleasing east-meets-west atmosphere against a backdrop of contrasting communist and contemporary architecture. There’s a partially exposed 1,800-year-old Roman city to discover, plenty of relaxing green spaces, and a variety of churches and mosques to explore. Alternatively, the hiking trails of Mt Vitosha are a short bus ride away.

Thessaloniki

Sofia - Thessaloniki

As our tour nears it end we will begin our journey back to Greece, but before we arrive in Athens we'll enjoy a night in the northern port city Thessaloniki in the afternoon. Its compact size makes it a delightfully walkable city, which you’ll discover for yourself on an orientation tour of the historic centre, visiting the Arch of Galerius, the old Byzantine walls, the Rotunda and the White Tower.

The tour will finish on the waterfront close to the famous White Tower, where you will find plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy the evening.

Thessaloniki - Athens

On the final day of our tour we'll make our illustrious return to Athens. Crossing the gorgeous Greek countryside we'll visit Kamena Vourla, a small town on the south coast of the Malian Gulf, and a beautiful spot to grab lunch.

Upon arrival in Athens we’ll check into our hotel before enjoying a farewell dinner on the last night of the tour.

  • We do walking tours through most of the cities we visit. Many of these cities are vast and old, often with steps and cobblestones. Our walking tours can last up to three hours with plenty of opportunities to take photographs and soak up the history of these fascinating places, but a certain level of fitness is required to enjoy your tour to the fullest.
  • Due to weight and space limitations, you are allowed to bring one main piece of luggage weighing no more than 20kg (app 44.1 lbs) and one small soft bag for hand luggage. On all tours, you will have to carry your own luggage into hotels (and up to your room if there is no elevator). Please bear this in mind when you are deciding what to pack.
  • Cancellation Policy
    - 37 days or more before the tour departure day: 10% of tour cost is charged.
    - 21-36 days before the tour departure day: 50% of tour cost is charged.
    - 20 days or less before the tour departure day: 100% of tour cost is charged.
