West Maui Mountains

West Maui Mountains also are known by West Maui Volcano, Maui Komo Hana and Mauna Kahalawai and shapes a shield volcano. The land formation makes up one-third of the island of Maui and its highest point is the 5,788 foot Pu'u Kukui. The gorgeous near 50,000-acre area is home to hundreds of native Hawaiian plants and animals. West Maui Mountain's Iao Valley containing a state park is a U.S. National Natural Landmark and contains the 1,200-foot Iao Needle rock formation. The valley contains the remains of many important Hawaiian chiefs buried in secret places.
