No Aztec Empire experience is complete without a trip to Teotihuacan, the ruins of an expansive Mesoamerican metropolis now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At its zenith between the 1st and 7th centuries A.D., Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas. Highlights include the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl (Plumed Serpent) and the Avenue of the Dead. Within the residential quarters are colorful murals depicting scenes of Aztec gods and goddesses as well as owls, jaguars and other mythical creatures.
