The highlight of this 33,264-acre national park located on Maui is the dormant volcano Haleakala meaning "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian that legend says Polynesian demi-God Maui held the sun there with a lasso to lengthen the day. Haleakala National Park was first established in 1916 as Hawaii National Park with Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, but was divided in 1961. The park that is visited by 1,450,000 people every year is separated into the Summit District mountain area and the Kipihulu District coastal area.
