Diamond Head

The Hawaii state monument that is an extinct volcano crater is a landmark on Oahu and its Waikiki Beach. Diamond Head is more than 475 acres and was formed approximately 300,000 years ago. Its name is attributed to the fact that European explorers believed its calcite crystals were actually diamonds. The United States National Natural Landmark contains lookout points, trails and historic sites. Diamond Head is often used on brochures and souvenirs as a symbol of Hawaii.
