Chinatown, Honolulu

Located in Downtown Honolulu, this neighborhood is historically one of the oldest established Chinatown districts in North America. Today it is a melting pot of diverse Asian and Pacific Islander culture coexisting amongst a throng of merchant shops, restaurants and exhibits. The first Chinese immigrants arrived in the area now on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in the late 1700s and many came throughout the next century to be laborers for Hawaii's sugar industry. The now-closed Wo Fat Restaurant inspired the "Hawaii Five-O" television series character Wo Fat and the fictional Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan was based on Chinatown's real life police inspector Chang Apana.
