Brooklyn Fulton Ferry

The Brooklyn neighborhood was created around and named after the much-needed ferry service that traversed the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn before the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. The Brooklyn Fulton Ferry Co. was founded in 1814 by Robert Fulton and ceased operations in 1924. The first commercial ferry service was established by Cornelis Dircksen in 1642. Today the site contains the entertainment venue Bargemusic and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Fulton Ferry is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
