8 Things You Should Know Before Going Backpacking
Backpacking is an excellent way to get a more intimate with your surroundings as you travel throughout your destination.  By exploring by foot, you’ll be granted a perspective on sights and attractions like no other.   Although this is a great experience, you must be prepared mentally for the challenges you may endure while on a backpacking trip.  Naturally you will be stripped of everyday conveniences and luxuries, but as soon as you accept that, you will truly be on your way to escaping from reality.  In addition to this, there are a few other things to keep in mind before preparing for a backpacking trip.

    * Make sure you are well informed of any fees or permits that may pertain to your trip.  Failure to do so could result in prosecution, or gunshot for trespassing.

    * Seeing that you will be walking the entire time, investing in a good pair of boots is a good idea.  Look for shoes that offer stiff, sturdy soles as well as those that provide support to the ankle.  Also make sure to break in your pair of boots before your hike.  Wear them out during a short hike so they have a chance to soften and conform to the curves of your foot.

    * If you find that your knees start to ache after a long trek, you may also look into purchasing a hiking pole.  These can do wonders for supporting your balance as well as encouraging a quicker stride with every step.

    * Layer your outfit.  It’s a good idea to wear a few layers of clothing so that you can take off or put on items as the weather changes.  Pack at least one other outfit to change into, should you get wet crossing a stream or in the rain.  Make sure to pack a few pairs of socks, which can easily get soaked in a pond.

    * Now for the backpack itself: make sure alter the straps so that most of the weight rests upon your hips, not your shoulders.  Your shoulders will thank you for this after hours of tedious hiking.  Try to pack light and bring only items that are necessary.

    * You’ll need a lot of energy as you backpack throughout your trip, so make sure you choose meals that will provide endurance as you hike.  Bring items like oatmeal, granola bars, vegetables and meat.

    * Stay hydrated.  With all the hiking you’ll be doing, its vital that you have enough water to drink at all times.

    * Lastly, take the proper safety precautions.  Remember to properly dispose of food at night to prevent wildlife from approaching your camp.  Although you may not get service, it’s a good idea to bring your cell phone with you just in case.  Also, make sure to educate yourself about the wild animals in your area.  It is not unusual to encounter bears or snakes while backpacking.

As long as you take the proper precautions before a backpacking trip, it should be an experience you will always remember.  Some of the best places to trek through are national parks or areas with challenging terrains.  Some travel companies offer great 12 day tours of South America during which you’ll be able to trek through the tropical jungles of Argentina and Peru.
