Summary of The Day: Your deluxe and private journey down the Great Ocean Road begins today as we depart Adelaide and journey into the Adelaide Hills.
First up on our itinerary is a trip to Hahndorf, a traditional German town in the Adelaide Hills and Mt Lofty Summit that offers sweeping views of Adelaide. From here we'll travel through grain and stock lands towards the town of Keith, where we have lunch and turn south towards wine country.
Then, our journey takes us through a relatively new wine region of Padthaway as we head towards the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves to learn of the fossil discoveries of Mega Fauna that make this site so internationally important.
After touring the caves here we'll travel into the scenic Coonawarra wine region recognized as one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon regions of the world. Here, we'll have the chance to sample some local wines from this highly awarded region before we continue on to out overnight destination, Mt Gambier.
Tonight we'll stay in luxurious rooms at ‘The Commodore’ which also houses an award winning restaurant for dinner and breakfast.
Summary of The Day: After breakfast prepare to be amazed as we enjoy a coastal drive along the Shipwreck Coast. We'll start at the blue crater lake in Mt Gambier and head to Port Fairy where we'll visit Tower Hill Reserve. Keep your camera close to spot Emus, Koalas, Kangaroos, and Echidnas.
From here our journey will continue to Warrnambool and Allansford in the heart of dairy country and home of Australia’s oldest dairy processing plant.
Then we'll begin our journey east through the Great Ocean Road, enjoying stunning views of the Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands. We'll visit London Bridge and the Loch Ard Gorge, the famous sight of an 18th century Australian shipwreck. Here the tale of this calm voyage gone wrong and see original artifacts, photos, and documents from the Loch Ard.
Next, we'll encounter one of Australia's icons, the Twelve Apostles, where we'll learn about the creation of these limestone pillars. You'll also have the chance to see this amazing region from the sky with a helicopter tour (own expense).
Finally, we'll pass through the Otaway National Park and Apollo Bay to arrive at the Apollo Bay Hotel for dinner. Then we'll arrive at our 4-star private villa for the night, set right within the native forest with stunning views of the Southern Ocean.
Summary of The Day: On the final day of our journey we'll enjoy breakfast at the Bay Leaf Cafe in Apollo Bay. Then we'll take some time to explore Otway National Park with a visit to Maits Rest. Here we'll take a 1km walk through a cool temperate rainforest gully discovering trees and ferns that date back millions of years to times when dinosaurs roamed this part of the world.
Then we'll begin our final journey to Melbourne, traveling along the last leg of the Great Ocean Road to Kennet River. Here we'll get to see wild Koalas nesting in the trees. Along the way we'll stop at scenic sights for photos and hear tales behind the making of the road. We'll also stop for lunch at Lorne, the largest of the local seaside villages and popular tourist towns.
Next we'll continue along the coast and take in the surf culture of the region with a visit to Torquay and Bells Beach. We also visit Anglesea Golf Club where we will hopefully see Kangaroos in their natural environment. Our journey then takes us through the historic gateway to the Great Ocean Road, Geelong. We have some afternoon tea along the re-designed waterfront before turning to Melbourne.
Our journey into Melbourne takes us from the west over the ‘West Gate Bridge,’ famous for its grandeur and checkered history. We will then escort you to your hotel and welcome you to Melbourne.
